St. Augustine’s Perez-Garcia Named 2022 TCCB Elementary Teacher of the Year

A St. Augustine teacher has been chosen as the 2022 Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops.

According to the Diocese of Laredo, this is a very significant award because only one teacher from across the state is selected as the elementary teacher of the year.

Olga Perez-Garcia has worked for more than 25 years at St. Augustine Elementary and Middle School and has helped approximately 1,000 children prepare for their First Communion.

According to the TCCB, she was chosen for her multiple roles at the school, including that of middle school religion and guidance teacher, elementary and middle school campus minister, and sacrament readiness coordinator in second year.

The diocese said she also served as a role model for Catholic teachers on how they can form their students into Christian disciples by fostering the student’s love for God and the Church.

“I am delighted to congratulate Ms. Perez-Garcia on being named Catholic Teacher of the Year for the State of Texas,” said the Reverend James A. Tamayo, DD, Bishop of the Diocese of Laredo. “Her dedication and love of teaching has had a significant impact on the lives of our students, and she deserves this recognition for her many years of service educating thousands of children not only in their studies but also in their faith. .”

As part of the TCCB bio, Perez-Garcia was born and raised in Laredo. She was hired in 1995 to start the Reading Intervention Program, where she served as a reading specialist with students from kindergarten to grade five who needed extra support to become competent and confident readers. .

It indicates that she attended St. Peter’s Memorial and graduated from the Ursuline Academy, and earned her teaching degree at Incarnate Word College in San Antonio. She is the mother of four children, all of whom graduated from St. Augustine.

“Often it is her that students, teachers and parents turn to during difficult times for advice, prayers, a listening ear or a shoulder to lean on,” said Barbra Zurita, Principal from St. Augustine Elementary and High School to TCCB. . “She always has the perfect prayer, the right words, a comforting message based on scripture.”
