Josephine Gallace, 100, of Graystone Manor in Altoona, died on Saturday. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Domenic and Angeline (Oliver) Gallace. Josie recently celebrated her 100th birthday with two special dinners, first with her family and then with her Graystone family.

Jo was predeceased by sisters, Catherine Esposti and Helen Wasson; and his brothers, Pierre and Jean.

She is survived by her niece, Carol Parris; Carol’s children: Mike (Tina); and Kara (Pete) and their daughter, Mitella; a nephew, John Gallace and his wife, Betsy, and their children: Don (Ashley), Becca, Jimmy and Tony. Also survives a very special cousin, Virginia Seidel; and several other cousins.

She graduated in 1940 from Altoona High School and retired from Beneficial Finance Co. after 42 years of service.

Josephine was a member of the Friends of the Altoona Area Public Library, the Park Hills Country Club, and a former member of Soroptimists International of Blair County, Catholic Daughters of America, and the Business and Professional Women’s Club.

She was a life member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and always enjoyed helping out at the church festival.

She also enjoyed travelling, reading, cooking and playing golf. Josie was still playing golf at the age of 95, playing 9 holes with her 92-year-old brother, Pete.

The family would like to thank the staff at Graystone Manor, Altoona for their compassion and excellent care for Jo over the past two years. She really felt like a member of their family.

There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at the Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel Catholic Church, celebrated by the Fransican Fathers. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Arrangements are made by The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in Josephine’s memory to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 806 11th St., Altoona, PA 16602.
