Immaculate Conception Catholic Church kicks off fire recovery efforts – Muleshoe Journal

By 8 a.m. on Sunday, December 12, about 200 worshipers had gathered at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Father Heriberto Mercado noticed smoke billowing from the ceiling and worked quickly and silently to evacuate everyone.

Muleshoe firefighters arrived at 8:10 am According to a press release from Muleshoe / Bailey County Fire Marshal Benny Parker, there was a very large amount of smoke inside the church, as well as noticeable flames and smoke coming from the southwest corner of the church. , in the eaves area. Some members of the congregation had noticed the smell of smoke before the firefighters arrived.

The flames have been extinguished, the church ventilated, and the smoke dissipated. The origin of the fire was in an attic in the southwest corner of the building.

The cause of the fire is currently undetermined, pending further investigation by the fire marshal and the insurance company. The press release notes that a possible cause will be electrical in nature.

The damage was limited to the attic, as well as collateral damage to surrounding areas of the building due to the heat, smoke and fire service overhaul.

“It’s so hard to see a lot of these things that have been damaged, things that you wouldn’t normally think about,” said Rosie Cabrera, president of the parish council. “The holy water font is broken and our main focal point, the stained glass, is damaged. It’s heartbreaking for everyone.

Muleshoe Immaculate Conception Catholic Church was established as a parish in 1956. Plans are underway to hold services in the parish hall behind the church.

“I think it’s great that everyone is coming together, giving love and support to the church,” Cabrera said. “People came the next day to help us move forward into the future. Many people came, even people from the community, to help create this new location in our room.
