Hickory Girls’ Golf Team Make District 10 History at PIAA Tournament
PIAA’s Top Class 2A Women’s Golf Team remains in District 10.
Only now, it is Hickory, and not North East, that holds this distinction.
The Hornets became the first district golf program outside of Erie County to win a title in this tournament. Their top three golfers, Sasha Petrochko, McKenzie Gustas and Luciana Masters, combined for a low score of 9 over par 225 in Monday’s 18-hole competition at York’s Heritage Hills Golf Resort.
North East, with senior star Lydia Swan making her last high school appearance, was third at 24 of 240. The Grapepickers have looked to join the girls from Villa Maria (2A in 2014-15) as golf teams from district with consecutive state championships.
Swan, who will be playing varsity golf at Division I at Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma, had a 4 under 68 round in unusually warm weather at Heritage Hills. She concluded her college career with two PIAA team gold medals and a third as an individual 2A champion in 2019.
“I went out (Monday) like, ‘Dude, it’s your last round of golf in high school! You have nothing to lose ! Go ahead, âSwan said. âI enjoyed (the tour), and when I like what I’m doing, I play better.
â(Monday) was a bit surreal, but at the same time, it wasn’t the end. I will continue to golf and compete for a long time.
Anna Swan, Lydia Swan’s younger sister, recorded a par 72 and Tatiana Llera a 100.
The PIAA team golf tournament began in 2006. Prior to Monday, its district winners represented Cathedral Prep, Villa Maria or North East.
The Hickory Girls added their school to this list with Monday’s breakthrough performance. The Hornets’ team was 14 less than Greensburg Central Catholic and 15 less than North East.
Petrochko, who won the District 2A individual women’s tournament, led Hickory with a score of 2 of 74. Gustas followed at 75 and Masters at 76.
Ava Liburdi (87) also started for the Hornets, who continued the district’s recent streak of success in state team play.
North East won the Boys 2A Tournament in 2018 and his Girls in 2020. That same year, Prep finished first in the Boys Class 3A field.
Class 3A girls
Swan wasn’t the only major senior in the district to have played his last round of high school on Monday.
The tournament also represented the last time Zoey McClain competed for McDowell. She shot a 2 of 74 for the Trojans, whose team score of 257 left them fourth.
Alexis Marsh (91) and Brooke Hamilton (92) completed the official scorers for McDowell’s team.
District 1 Downingtown East, at 236, won by a two-stroke advantage over District 7 Peters Township.
Class 2A boys
Union City was far fifth in Monday’s competition. The Bears, at 344, were 40 strokes behind District 12 winner Devon Prep.
Union City’s Josh James returned to the course where he won last week’s PIAA 2A Men’s Individual Tournament. The junior had a 4 of 75.
Cole DeSimone of the Bears followed with an 79 and Tyler Parkhurst, another individual state medalist from last week, an 84.
Class 3A boys
McDowell, the top team in the district, did not qualify for Monday’s top schools event. The Trojans were eliminated during a sub-regional tournament in DuBois.
Monday’s winner was District 6 State College, which won a playoff against District 7 Fox Chapel. These teams ended the settlement tied at 8 of 292.
