PENANG:
The Church of Divine Mercy, Sungai Ara, celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation after the churches fully reopened, post pandemic. Twenty-two enthusiastic young adults were confirmed by Bishop Sebastian Francis on July 17.

Preparations leading up to the event began earlier, in June 2022, when the youngsters gathered in Stella Maris, Penang, for their confirmation camp. The camp was organized and run by two teams: The Genesis Youths of Mercy CDM (from Divine Mercy Church, Sungai Ara, Penang) and CHS Haven Youth Ministry (from Holy Spirit Cathedral).

Brendan Lo of Genesis Youths of Mercy CDM and Adrian Oyog of CHS Haven Youth Ministry led the group, assisted by support team members from both youth groups. Their catechists, Roland Victor and Melinda Ann Michael, who led them throughout the year, were also present.

It was a fun camp, which was also an eye-opener for both parties – the future confirmands as well as the organizers. They pondered matters of faith, their future, sought the truth, discussed, argued, revealed many sincere anxieties of their understanding of their faith, fear, frustration, anger, disappointment, joy, amazement and their thirst to know more about God.

During the Confirmation Mass, the Bishop told the young adults to step forward and be ambassadors of the Church, to be filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit and to be the change. Be the change for truth, love, intimacy with God, fellowship with the Church, and doing it their youthful way. Abandon the traditional methods and introduce the new.

The parish priest, Father Michael Raymond OFM Cap, in his counsels, said confirmation is not the end, but the beginning. This is the start of their journey as they move through the world.

The parish wishes the confirmands of 2022 a blessed and wonderful future. Go ahead, and seize the day!

Here is a poem summarizing the sincere journey of the confirmands:

After two years of absence
Languish at home
We joyfully participated in the celebration
The Confirmation of our teenagers,
now grown.

The story began several years ago
from
Yet it has just begun
Adventure unfolds before them
There is still a lot to do
Finished.
about seventeen years ago
These young people started their
journey
taking their first breath
They have become part of a family.

seven years later
They met for the first time
In class, they learned
From God, Divine.

At Baptism
Their first sacrament
They were brought to the altar
By their parents.

They enthusiastically received
At the age of ten
Their first communion
And they felt so big.

Fast forward another ten years
In June two thousand and two
They were talking and thinking
Thought of their faith through
and through.

At the camp
Youth led
They asked and searched
Seek the truth.

come seventeenth of july
A memorable day
A stage they have reached
“Thank God!”, I hear the parents say.

shiny faces
Bright and eager
“Today is the day
Let’s not delay!

At the Church of Divine Mercy
Twenty-two young people gather
Before Bishop Sebastian
francis

At the holy altar.
It’s Confirmation Day!
And with one voice they will say
It’s their choice
To follow God’s way.

Of their own volition
Not made by their parents
Deliberately and consciously
They make their commitments.

Serve God and each other
With the talents given from above
They will spread their wings and fly
Testify to the love of Christ

In their unique way
Make choices as you go
The lessons they’ve learned in the last ten
years
Seeds of faith that have been
sown.

They renewed their baptismal vows
With chrism oil they are blessed
Sealed with the gift of the Spirit
They proudly display their coat of arms.

Says Bishop Sebastian,
“Don’t live for tomorrow
Live your life today
Move, be the change
Go ahead, do it your way.

“Confirmation is not the end”,
said Father Michael Raymond,
“It’s the beginning”.
Through you all will see
God’s love shines.
