Catholic Diocese closes Warren Church; principal place of worship chosen for the parish of Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown announced in a press release the closure of Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Warren on Sunday.

A closing mass will be held for the church during the month of May.

“It’s always sad when a church building closes because it holds so many memories. One of my responsibilities as bishop is to ensure that our history is preserved and the artifacts are treated with reverence and respect,” said David J. Bonnar, Bishop of Youngstown.

This is just part of two major decisions made by the diocese over the weekend.

Bishop Bonnar also confirmed that Ss. Peter and Paul Church will serve as the primary place of worship for Holy Apostles Parish in Youngstown and as the location for the parish’s weekend Mass, beginning Wednesday, June 1. .

The Church of St. Stephen of Hungary will serve as a secondary place of worship for the parish. Saint Stephen of Hungary will be open for times of prayer, with a mass celebrated twice a year.

Bishop Bonnar wrote, “As Bishop, I affirm this vision for both campuses of your parish, and ask for your prayers and support that this vision may be maintained.”

Bishop Bonnar sent letters to these respective parishes which were read over the weekend at Mass.
